- Barbara ArmstrongApr 24, 2018★ ★ ★ ★ ★We hired Mikasa to do a large wheelchair modification of our master bath and flooring throughout our 116 year old house. This home was built by my husband’s great grandparents in 1901 and has been in his family ever since. We knew we wanted the best working on this family heirloom.
Leo, Chase and Javier were great at communicating with us throughout the project. That was very important to us as this was our first time renovating anything. It was helpful that they were available via phone/text/email and in person.
The flooring was three different heights with transitions throughout because the house had been added on to in 1945 and 1999. (Original structure was built in 1999) In addition, Beto and the crew replaced failing structure under our fireplaces and hearths (One chimney and two hearths - basically back to back fireplaces.) and built us a new mantle. Not only do I now feel sure that our insert is not going to fall through the floor but our mantle looks like it was built back in 1901 - it matches the style of our home and the original crown molding on our windows and doors! The crew was meticulous - right down to making sure that our existing doors would swing properly with the new floor height.
Our floors are amazing! We knew we wanted hard surface floors to ease my husband’s ability to get around in a wheelchair and the crew made that happen. We went with vinyl plank because of its durability. Day in and day out of mobility equipment, animals and red dirt are no match for these floors. They were installed beautifully and really do look like hard wood.
Our master bathroom! We took our (ginormous) walk in closet and turned that in to a roll in shower with a bench, two shower heads and a drop in tub. It is STUNNING! Over and above that, it is wheelchair accessible and safe for my husband to use. We can’t believe that it’s *our* bathroom!!
Because we used our closet for the shower, Beto and the crew had to build out a new closet for us. It is smaller than our old closet but it is so well appointed and thought out that it holds triple what our old closet did. Beto built the closet custom to our needs and it’s perfect. Because of this build out, the original wood siding and paint had to be match. No small feat because our home is a very unique shade of blue. But Mikasa did it! The match is perfect and looks like it’s been there all along as opposed to an add on. The blending is seamless.
The care and workmanship put in to our project was top notch. We chose to live through the modifications and the crew and Mikasa, in general, we very respectful of this. They were very understanding that my husband would need breaks from all of the activity and that we would need days to go to medical appointments. Mikasa accommodated all of this. They even finished ahead of schedule and under budget.
With such an old home, we have a lot of other projects that need to be done. Mikasa is our pick to do this work. They are hard working, meticulous and professional. We are very pleased with our experience and with our finished projects.
